Just Connect and International Students Connect

These are 96-page magazine-style materials for international students in the UK. Ideally they can be handed to students on arrival to be kept as personal records of their stay in the UK. They introduce readers to important issues in a light-hearted way. Above all, they encourage students to make the most of their stay in the country while exploring the rich terrains of inter- and cross-cultural awareness.
The books are supported by substantial Resource Materials. These provide EFL/ESOL classroom materials on topics such as culture shock, British identities, British families, making friends, educational culture, food, leisure, the law, governance and much more. While informing students of British customs and practices, they teach through the cultural capital of all the students present in any given classroom.
Just Connect is suitable for students at intermediate English language levels.

International Students Connect is suited to more mature students with upper-intermediate and advanced English.

"I have become a big fan of your materials."
Mike Humphries - International Support Officer and evaluator at Bournemouth and Poole College

Just Connect and International Students Connect will not just entertain and inform international students but will raise many a smile among teachers. What better way to introduce international students to British culture than through the all-pervasive British sense of humour? But there is also a deeply serious intent at work. The magazines and the Support Materials are not content merely to allude to issues like first impressions, culture shock and complex British identities, but provide materials that students can work through to reach their own understanding of these matters in their own terms.

When students take these magazines home they have more than a record of their stay in the UK: they have an account of their own explorations in another culture and its language. The Support Materials are designed to be used in language and cultural learning classrooms. Students and teachers can choose topics in the books and do more work on them with the Support Materials. Written by Robert Teed and copiously illustrated by Felix Bennett, the books have been designed so that students can 'brand' them for the institutions they attend.
